TAKE ACTION BY WRITING, FAXING OR EMAILING DFO
Updated: March 6, 2006
Note: We will release a new "form" letter on March 8th. In the meantime, you can use some of the info below to create your own letters. We have updated all of the contact information at the bottom of this page.
The current action campaign to Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is to respectfully ask DFO to do the following:
- develop and implement a reunification plan for spring or fall of 2006
- provide sustainable funding to monitor Luna until he is reunited with his pod
- be ready to take action if the opportunity presents itself for a natural reunion between Luna and the L Pod
- ensure that Luna will never end up in an aquarium or marine park
Please feel free to write your own letter, or copy and paste the text in the sample letter below. All contact information is located further down this page. If you are short on time, you can use the Auto Emailer below. Don't forget to send letters to NMFS as well.
SAMPLE LETTER TO DFO

cc: Larry Murray, Deputy Minister, Department of Fisheries and Oceans
Paul MacGillivray, Acting Regional Director, Fisheries and Oceans Canada
Don Radford, Acting Director General for the Pacific Region
Marilyn Joyce, Marine Mammal Resource Coordinator
Rt. Hon. Paul Martin, Prime Minister of Canada
I am writing this letter to request a formal public announcement regarding the Department of Fisheries and Oceans strategy to protect L-98 (Luna) and reintroduce him to his pod.
On April 5, 2004 Minister Geoff Regan confirmed DFO's commitment to "do what is best for L98 and L-pod while protecting the public". In the same press release DFO announced a plan to relocate Luna closer to his pod.
On October 1, 2004 DFO released a statement that the situation would be reassessed. Since this date, DFO has not made any information on the situation public.
I am requesting that DFO publicly:
- release a statement regarding its strategy to reintroduce Luna to his pod
- provide information on plans that have been made to track the L-pod movement to increase the chances of a natural reunion
- provide information on a plan to implement an effective, accountable stewardship program
I would appreciate a quick response to this request.
Yours sincerely,
